1. The 15th University Consortium on Aquatic Science (UCAS) 第十五屆水環境科學高校聯盟研討會

National Taiwan Ocean University (NTOU), The University of Hong Kong (HKU), Xiamen University (XMU), and National Sun Yat-Sen University (NSYSU) hold the ‘‘University Consortium on Aquatic Sciences (UCAS)’’ every year. This seminar is fully led by graduate students, including the itinerary, agenda, and discussions. Teachers only play a consulting role, mainly in training students to organize and manage international academic seminars supplemented by mutual encouragement of academic research. Arrangements and conference reports are all conducted in English.

The 15th UCAS symposium in 2023 was held at The University of Hong Kong from October 23-27, with the theme of ‘Change our planet or change ourselves’. The Center of Excellence for the Oceans at NTOU coordinated a teacher to lead 14 master and doctoral students to participate.

This seminar saw interactive participation from a total of 45 graduate students from various institutions.

本校與香港大學、廈門大學和中山大學每年舉辦「水環境科學研究高校聯盟研討會University Consortium on Aquatic Sciences (UCAS)」,研討會由研究生全面主導,包括行程、議程和討論都由研究生自己安排,會議報告都以全英文進行,教師僅扮演諮詢角色、主要培養學生的組織和辦理國際學術研討會的經驗,輔以互相勉勵學術研究的精進。

2023年第十五屆UCAS1023-27日於香港大學舉辦,主題為’Change our planet or change ourselves’,本校海洋中心統籌1名教師率14名學生與會,本次研討會共45名各校的研究生參加互動。

2. The Center of Excellence for the Oceans promotes collaboration with the benchmark institution, the Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute (AORI) of the University of Tokyo.海洋中心促進與標竿單位日本東京大學大氣海洋研究所(AORI)合作

The Center of Excellence for the Oceans at National Taiwan Ocean University(CEO) reached an exchange and cooperation agreement with the Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute at the University of Tokyo (AORI) in 2018. This agreement included mutual visits and resulted in the publication of 13 joint research papers between 2018 and 2022, as well as two additional co-authored works in 2023. On December 11-12, 2023, the Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute at the University of Tokyo (AORI), led by its director, Dr. Susumu Hyodo, brought a team of eight researchers to National Taiwan Ocean University (NTOU) for the ‘‘AORI/UT-CEO/NTOU Joint Symposium on Marine Science.’’ The symposium featured presentations and academic exchanges from four faculty members of the Center of Excellence for the Oceans (sub-project leaders of Higher Education Sprout Project-The Featured Areas Research Center Program, Ministry of Education) and seven faculty members and students from the University of Tokyo. The symposium attracted nearly 100 participants, and during the event, NTOU and AORI renewed their Memorandum of Agreement (MOA).

The Center of Excellence for the Oceans further discussed potential areas of cooperation with AORI, focusing on the center's key research directions, such as hydrothermal vent ecosystems and microplastic pollution in the Kuroshio Current. Both parties plan to sign a new cooperation agreement in 2024, with concrete resource commitments to drive collaboration, and are preparing to hold another joint academic symposium in Tokyo, Japan, in 2024.

In addition to the symposium, Dr. Takuhei Shiozaki from AORI delivered a lecture at the Center of Excellence for the Oceans on November 1, 2023, and discussed research collaboration on carbon sequestration by Kuroshio plankton. From November 21 to December 20, 2023, Dr. Shuhei Nashida from AORI conducted collaborative research on copepods at the center. In total, six substantial joint research projects are set to be executed in collaboration with AORI.

  SDGs Relevance:

This collaboration aligns with several key SDGs, particularly:

  • SDG 14 (Life Below Water): The collaboration focuses on marine research, including hydrothermal vent ecosystems, microplastic pollution, and carbon sequestration by Kuroshio plankton, all of which contribute directly to preserving marine ecosystems and addressing the challenges of ocean pollution and climate change.
  • SDG 13 (Climate Action): The research on carbon sequestration by plankton and the study of microplastics in marine currents contribute to understanding climate change impacts and finding sustainable solutions for carbon capture in the ocean.
  • SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals): The cooperation between National Taiwan Ocean University and the University of Tokyo’s AORI highlights the importance of international collaboration, sharing knowledge and resources to achieve sustainable development goals.

海洋中心在2018年與日本東京大學大氣海洋研究所(AORI)達成了學術交流合作協議。自2018年至2022年間,雙方共同發表了13篇期刊論文,在2023年發表了2篇共同著作。

20231211日至12日,AORI所長Dr. Susumu Hyodo帶領8名研究人員蒞臨本校參加「AORI/UT-CEO/NTOU海洋科學聯合研討會」。本次研討會中,海洋中心的4位教師(教育部高等教育深耕計畫特色領域研究中心子計畫召集人)以及東京大學的7位師生進行了演講和學術交流。會議吸引了近百名參與者。在會議期間,海洋大學與AORI續簽了合作備忘錄(MOA)。

中心進一步與AORI討論了合作事宜,重點包括熱泉生態和黑潮塑膠微粒污染等主要研究方向。預計於2024年簽署合作協議,並計劃於2024年在東京的AORI再次舉辦雙邊學術交流研討會,進一步推動雙方合作。

此外,AORIDr. Takuhei Shiozaki2023111日來到海洋中心,進行了有關黑潮浮游生物固碳的演講與研究合作討論。Dr. Shuhei Nashida則於20231121日至1220日進行了橈足類的合作研究。總計,雙方建立了可以共同執行的6個實質研究合作項目。

3. 6th International Symposium on Gluten-Free Cereal Products and Beverages 2023第六屆無麩質食品與飲料成果國際研討會

In March 2023, this project utilized the baking equipment from the Department of Food Science laboratory to develop gluten-free yam cake technology, which was transferred free of charge to local partners in Gongliao. Professor Song Wenjie from the Department of Food Science at National Taiwan Ocean University participated in the 6th International Gluten-Free Symposium, co-hosted by the ICC Headquarters and Italy's CREA (Council for Agricultural Research and Economics). The event brought together 96 experts from 22 countries to discuss gluten-free topics from various perspectives, including demand, supply, ingredient development, and product innovation. Professor Song developed a gluten-free chiffon cake by substituting rice flour for wheat flour and adding yam, studying the impact of yam on the aroma and characteristics of gluten-free rice cakes, and shared this innovative technique with international experts.

Currently, local partners have been using this technology to produce gluten-free yam cakes, with sales increasing each year. In 2023, they sold 500 cakes, and in 2024, sales reached 1,500 cakes, contributing to the development of local specialty products and boosting the local economy.

本計畫於1123月使用食科系實驗室烘焙設備開發山藥無麩質蛋糕技術並將其無償技轉給貢寮在地夥伴。由國立臺灣海洋大學食品科學系宋文杰教授參加 ICC 總部和義大利 CREA(農業研究與經濟委員會)共同舉辦的第六屆無麩質國際研討會,與全球22個國家、96位專家以無麩質為主題,從需求面、供應面、素材研發及產品開發各個層面進行探討。宋文杰教授透過使用米粉取代小麥粉並添加山藥來製作無麩質戚風蛋糕,研究山藥對於無麩質米蛋糕香氣與特性的影響,並將此新穎技術推廣給各國認識。

目前在地夥伴使用此技術製作的山藥無麩質蛋糕銷售量年年增加,112年銷售500個,113年銷售1500個,額外增加當地特色產品與促進消費經濟效益。

4. Advancing Academic Collaboration: Recruitment, Partnership, and Promotion Initiatives in India.赴印度國內各大學院校招生並推動姊妹校合作及進行學術交流與宣傳推廣海洋大學、並發表客座演講吸引印度優秀研究人員、深化台印雙方學術研究交流

Distinguished Professor Jiang-Shiou Hwang of the Institute of Marine Biology at National Taiwan Ocean University undertook a short-term research visit to Coimbatore, India, from July 24 to October 23, 2023. During his stay, Professor Hwang delivered recruitment presentations at 18 universities across India, actively promoting the university’s international graduate programs and scholarship opportunities. He also facilitated sister school collaborations and engaged in academic exchanges. His guest lectures successfully attracted top Indian researchers, further enhancing academic collaboration between Taiwan and India.This visit also served as an opportunity for Distinguished Professor Hwang to promote National Taiwan Ocean University, with the aim of encouraging more departments to attract international students and advance the university's internationalization efforts. He emphasized the importance of widely publicizing the university’s internationalization achievements to improve its rankings in both domestic and global evaluations. Given that India is an English-speaking country where university courses are conducted entirely in English, Professor Hwang noted that these students could significantly contribute to the research output of NTOU. He urged collective efforts to elevate the universitys research endeavors to new heights.

  • SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure): By promoting research collaborations and attracting top Indian researchers, the initiative supports innovation in marine biology and other research areas, contributing to the development of robust academic infrastructure and international research networks.

國立海洋大學生物研究所黃將修特聘教授於2023724日至1023日赴印度孔巴托進行短期研究。在此期間,黃教授於印度18所大學進行招生演講,積極推廣海大招收國際研究生的計劃與獎學金資訊,並推動姊妹校合作及展開學術交流。他也發表了客座演講,吸引印度優秀研究人員,進一步深化台印雙方的學術研究合作。藉此機會,黃教授大力宣傳海洋大學,期望各系所能夠吸引更多研究生,推動海大真正實現國際化。同時,黃教授認為海大應廣泛宣傳其國際化的成果,以提升在國內外國際化評比中的得分。印度作為全英語教學的國家,大學課程皆以英語授課,這對海大教師的論文發表極有幫助。黃教授呼籲大家共同努力,推動海大的研究更上一層樓。
