  1. Fish fry tagging and releasing

Fry release has always been one of the most effective ways to restore fishery resources. By increasing the amount of fry added to the hatchery, the amount of economic fish species can be increased, and through the intermediate cultivation of box-net culture, the fry can grow to a larger size. Finally, its survival rate can be greatly improved. In the past, there were not many studies on the effects of fry release on fishery resource proliferation. In order to effectively evaluate the feasibility of offshore wind farms to develop marine pastures, the Changhua District Fisheries Association worked with the National Taiwan Ocean University and Taiwan Electric Power Company to select an offshore wind farm located off the coast of Changhua Fangyuan. Taipower's Phase I Demonstration Wind Farm in the Yun-Chang Uplift sea area uses identification and release of fish fry, combined with genetic testing technology, to evaluate the habitat utilization and fishery resource proliferation effects of fish fry on the offshore wind farm.

Sustainable Impact: Conduct fish fry tagging and release at offshore wind farms to comprehensively restore marine resources, and assess the habitat use of the fry in the offshore wind farms and the effectiveness of fishery resource enhancement.

  1. Marine waste education and beach cleanup

Common fishery and marine wastes on the eastern and western coasts of Taiwan are different. Common fishery wastes on the western coast mainly come from aquaculture fisheries, and oyster farming uses the most Styrofoam floats. What you can see is floating on the sea surface and on the beach. Abandoned is just the tip of the iceberg. A large number of abandoned fishing nets and abandoned oyster ropes sink to the bottom of the sea. In addition to causing marine pollution, the most terrifying thing is that they will entangle marine life and cover coral reefs, causing ecological catastrophe. This activity led Hainan University students and Beigang agricultural and industrial students and local fishermen to participate in the understanding of marine debris and the purpose of beach cleanup. This course invited the corporate body Taiwan Barbarian Foot Ecology to share with everyone. After the course, we led everyone to collect tools and go to the fishing port. The shore clean-up activities lead fishermen to understand first-hand the terrible environmental havoc caused by marine debris. It is hoped that fishermen can implement recycling, classification and protect the ocean in their daily lives.

Sustainable Impact:  Through understanding ocean waste and participating in beach cleanup actions, participants can not only gain an intuitive understanding of environmental issues but also influence their daily habits, laying the groundwork for future ocean protection and resource management.

  1. The feeding preference, spatial-temporal distribution, and niche partitioning of two sympatric

The bigeye thresher (Alopias superciliosus) and pelagic thresher shark (A. pelagicus) are apex predators in the marine ecosystem, and are common shark species caught in the coastal and offshore waters of Taiwan. The variations in species population dynamics may directly or indirectly affect the marine ecosystem. Some aspects of fishery biology such as reproduction, age and growth, and stock assessment of these two species have been described; however, these species' feeding preferences, spatial-temporal distribution, and niche partitioning as conclusions have yet been addressed. Thus, the study aims to examine the feeding preference, spatial-temporal distribution, and habitat partitioning effect of pelagic thresher and bigeye thresher sharks based on the specimens collected at Nanfanao fish market, caught by the local long-line fishing vessels in the western North Pacific.

Currently, the study has collected 141 muscle samples and 15 vertebrae samples, including 81 bigeye thresher sharks (98-212 cm PCL) and 60 pelagic thresher sharks (98-193 cm PCL). The muscle isotope analysis results show that the δ13C values of bigeye thresher sharks from Nanfangao range between -18.6‰ to -15.9‰ (mean -17.2±0.4‰); δ15N values range between 11.1‰ to 14.1‰ (mean 12.7±0.7‰), with a trophic level of 4.3. For pelagic thresher sharks, δ13C values range between -17.8‰ to -16.2‰ (mean -17.2±0.3‰); δ15N values range between 10.8‰ to 14.5‰ (mean 13.0±0.7‰), with a trophic level of 4.4. There is a significant difference in the average δ15N values between bigeye thresher and pelagic thresher sharks (P<0.05). Regarding the relationship between muscle δ13C and body length, both bigeye thresher and pelagic thresher sharks exhibit oscillations, but overall remain stable. However, the relationship between muscle δ15N and body length shows an increase from juveniles to sub-adults, a decrease from sub-adults to adults, and a slight increase in older individuals. In the mature stage, the δ15N values of both species tend to decrease with growth, which may be related to slower metabolism and different conversion rates. For the continuous δ13C values in vertebrae, bigeye thresher female sharks exhibit an S-shaped oscillation but remain overall stable, while males also oscillate but show a decreasing trend, indicating that males may move from nearshore to offshore areas as they grow. This suggests that male and female bigeye thresherr sharks might have separate habitats. The continuous δ13C values in vertebrae of pelagic thresher sharks show a V-shaped variation.

Sustainable Impact: The results of this study help to understand the ecological nich and behavioral characteristics of Alopias superciliosus and A. pelagicus, providing scientific evidence for the conservation and management of these species.

  1. The Visit to Badouzi Fishing Village and Ecological Survey

The ‘‘Thriving Fishing Villages - International Blue Economy Demonstration Zone’’ University Social Responsibility (USR) project at National Taiwan Ocean University, led by Assistant Professor Hui-Chiao Wang, has embodied the spirit of USR by continuously guiding the Badouzi Industry and Tourism Promotion Association in outdoor education activities for four consecutive years. These activities, conducted in collaboration with the Youth Development Administration, feature a variety of local marine education programs. The most recent event was specially designed for Ren'ai Elementary School, offering students not only a deeper understanding of their hometown but also a multi-sensory experience to strengthen their knowledge of the ocean.

To align with the second-grade interdisciplinary curriculum of Ren'ai Elementary School—’Sea & City Smart: Intertidal Zone Adventure’—which incorporates SDG14 on marine ecosystems, National Taiwan Ocean University and the Badouzi Industry and Tourism Promotion Association designed an outdoor marine education activity titled ‘‘Traveling Back in Time to the Land of Witches: A Visit to Badouzi Fishing Village and Ecological Survey.’’ Through guided explanations, students explored the intertidal zone of Daping Coast, learned about marine ecosystems, traced the origins of food they’ve seen on their tables, and discovered the traditional survival skills of the early residents of Badouzi Fishing Village.

The activities on the 18th included three main parts: treasure hunting in the intertidal zone, a hands-on experience with the traditional ‘‘basha’’ fishing net, and making pressed seaweed bookmarks. During the intertidal zone exploration, students observed various algae and marine organisms, while guides used relatable examples to teach about tidal flows and species diversity. The basha net experience allowed students to simulate how early villagers of Badouzi used this sustainable fishing method, thereby learning the importance of marine conservation.

Assistant Professor Wang explained that early fisherwomen used to harvest seaweed, clean it, dry it in the sun, and turn it into a traditional jelly. Through this activity, students not only learned about the six-step drying process of seaweed but also crafted their own seaweed bookmarks. As a fitting end to the hot day, the students enjoyed a refreshing seaweed jelly drink while viewing different stages of the seaweed’s preparation, making this chilled treat a joyful memory.

Thanks to the efforts of Assistant Professor Wang, over the past few years, three elementary schools in Keelung and high schools from other counties have visited Badouzi to learn about fishing village culture. These educational programs, which have become a favorite of students and teachers, offer tourism students at Ocean University the opportunity to intern as tour guides, preparing them for future employment. Collaborating with the Badouzi Industry and Tourism Promotion Association, they have also developed various travel itineraries. The goal is to allow more people to delve into the history and development of Badouzi while fostering an appreciation for its rare marine environment and culture. Schools across Taiwan are encouraged to visit Keelung’s Badouzi to experience its rich fishing culture and marine ecology!

Sustainable Impact: Enhance elementary school students' understanding of their hometown (Badouzi) by experiencing marine ecology, fostering an awareness of valuing and protecting the ocean.

NTOU has long been dedicated to marine conservation and research. Through this partnership with the New Taipei City Government, the university helped establish the nation's first harbor-based ‘‘Mid-Term Rearing Base’’ at Meiyanshan Fishing Harbor. This facility leverages the natural advantages of the harbor's seawalls and bay to introduce Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) technology, creating a habitat that supports the survival of released fish fry. This approach not only improves survival rates but also reduces the stress of long-distance transportation, helping the fish adapt more easily to the wild.

The innovative ‘‘Mid-Term Rearing’’ model has attracted attention from the international academic community, with related research successfully published in the renowned journal Frontiers in Marine Science. During today’s event, a total of 8,000 fish fry, including species such as black porgy, spotted knifejaw, black seabream, and red porgy, were released. This effort is expected to significantly contribute to the restoration of marine ecosystems and the replenishment of fishery resources.

As a leader in marine science and technology, NTOU will continue to advance the application of mid-term rearing techniques while collaborating closely with local communities and organizations to promote marine resource conservation. Through this event, NTOU hopes to raise public awareness about the importance of sustainable marine resources and encourage collective efforts to protect our ocean environment.

Sustainable Impact: NTOU collaborates to promote marine conservation by participating in the ecological release activities for World Ocean Day.

  1. Aquatic Biology Research and Conservation Center cooperates with the New Taipei City Government to conduct research

In  2014, National Taiwan Ocean University collaborated with the New Taipei City Government to establish the ‘‘Aquatic Biology Research and Conservation Center’’ at the Gongliao Marine Resource Restoration Park in New Taipei City. This facility, covering an area of 511 pings (around 1,690 square meters), serves as an off-campus marine research base for the Center of Excellence for the Oceans (NTOU) . The center focuses on seedling propagation, algae cultivation, marine biology research, conservation, and education. It actively participates in the breeding and release of local species unique to Taiwan's northeast coast, such as cuttlefish, flower crabs, and abalone, as well as coral restoration. The center also collaborates with local communities to promote diversified marine education, fostering marine farming and ecological conservation efforts.

The ‘‘Aquatic Biology Research and Conservation Center,’’ in collaboration with the New Taipei City Government, established the first fisheries demonstration area in Taiwan at Gongliao's Mao'ao, known as the Mao'ao Cultivated Fisheries Demonstration Zone. The center has successfully completed the full-cycle breeding of notable northern marine species, including tiger-striped cuttlefish and rust-spotted flower crabs, as well as other aquatic species, from mating and egg-laying to adult stages, with large numbers of juveniles released into the wild.

On June 15, 2023, the center, in partnership with the New Taipei City Government, organized the ‘‘World Oceans Day Event Series – Marine Reforestation, Coral Restoration, and the Release of Juvenile Abalone and Cuttlefish’’ at Fulian Elementary School in Gongliao's Mao'ao Bay. During the event, 5,000 juvenile cuttlefish, 110,000 juvenile abalone, and 70 kilograms of sea fungus and Gracilaria were released. The event featured beautiful ocean views, educational exhibits, hands-on activities, food tastings, and guided tours of the Marine Resource Restoration Park, offering the public a unique opportunity to experience marine ecology firsthand. This event brought together local government, fishermen’s associations, conservation groups, and residents, strengthening collaboration in marine restoration and education.

Additionally, in cooperation with the New Taipei City Government, the center has launched the ‘‘Gongliao Aquatic Center – Sustainable Marine Action and Scientific Resource Restoration’’ initiative. This initiative, the first of its kind in Taiwan, is jointly led by local government and a university to conduct scientific resource restoration. It has achieved groundbreaking results in the breeding of species such as cuttlefish, flower crabs, abalone, and crystal phoenix snails, along with resource release efforts. The New Taipei City Government has also transformed Gongliao’s Meiyan Mountain Fishing Port into a resource release incubation base. To enhance the effectiveness of fish fry release, the base practices Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) and creates artificial habitats, enabling the release of multiple species. This transformation has made the once underutilized fishing port a sustainable resource restoration site, setting a pioneering example nationwide.

In 2023, the center developed an AI-based cloud system for automated measurement of abalone sizes in aquaculture. This system is compatible with common IP cameras (with a resolution of 1080p or higher) and enables fully automated abalone size measurement. Once the system is installed at the aquaculture site, it automatically sends camera footage to a private cloud for AI recognition. Operators can remotely view the footage via mobile phones, computers, or on-site equipment to monitor the number and size of abalone in real-time. This system has significantly assisted Gongliao abalone farmers in monitoring their stock and supporting the development of the local abalone farming industry.

In 2023, the ‘‘Aquatic Biology Research and Conservation Center’’ organized more than 20 marine education promotion events, hosting over 50 visiting groups, including The Affiliated Keelung Maritime Senior High School of National Taiwan Ocean University, Fu Jen Catholic University,  Keelung community residents, and New Taipei City Haishan Primary  School. Over 1,000 participants attended, raising public awareness of marine resource conservation.

Sustainable Impact:

  1. Established a resource restoration model jointly led by the government and universities, creating a pioneering case at the national level.
  2. The developed artificial intelligence aquaculture system has elevated the monitoring and management efficiency of abalone farming to a new level.

  1. Stable isotopes in scales of mangrove snapper Lutjanus argentimaculatus as an indicator for origin discrimination.

Identifying a fish’s artificial or natural origin is crucial for stock enhancement assessments. In this study, we collected specimens of hatchery (including the early fry, reared, and released juveniles) and wild mangrove snapper Lutjanus argentimaculatus to explore the feasibility of using δ13C and δ15N values in scales as a non-lethal alternative to muscle tissues for discriminating between hatchery and wild origins. The results showed scales generally enriched in δ13C value and relatively consistent in δ15N value compared to muscle. Significant correlations were found between the two tissues for both δ13C and δ15N values (R2 = 0.80–0.88). Based on the isotopic composition of the scale core, individuals with different origins could be effectively discriminated, achieving a classification success rate of 77.6%. The random forest analysis revealed that a δ13C value of 15.8‰ could be a reference for determining the hatchery and wild origins of mangrove snapper. This study provides an isotopic approach for assessing the benefit of stock enrichment in mangrove snapper. It highlights the importance of regular sampling and scales analysis to expand fishery management and conservation practices.

Sustainable Impact: The potential of using scales for source identification can help fishery managers better understand and monitor the status of fish resource enhancement.
